The founding of the Public Records Office in Northern Territory is also known as Northern Territory Archives brings together the collections of the Archives Office of Northern Territory to provide the people of NT community with easy access to records about the people of Northern Territory and about their cultural and documentary heritage.

The NT Archive and Heritage Office’s objective is to create awareness, understanding and access to the history of Northern Territory to the people of the territory by bringing together the resources of the community and its government.

The Archive of Northern Territory comprise  of records about Wills, convicts, people’s immigration, marriages, divorce records, births and death records. It has a comprehensive collection of the records of the people of Northern Territory.

Additionally NT Archives preserves and disposes the State government records in the territory to make sure that a certain record is accessible to public and the government for a limited amount of time.

The Public Records Office of Northern Territory also seeks to acquire private records which have significant value to the public of the Northern Territory and can be used to showcase the natural, social, political, economic and cultural history of Northern Territory.
